“Sir, I am a government employee. I came here to take note of your family members for the population census. Can you please let me know the members of your family?”, A man with a neat shirt and pant asked him politely.
“Please sit down sir. We are a family of seven. I am 34 years old. My wife is 31. My first son is 12, the second son is 10, the third daughter is 9, the fourth daughter is 6 and the last daughter is 9 months”, He answered the man with an innocent smile.
“Daddy can we please include our dog name also in our family list”, The second boy asked his father. His father fondled his hair, smiled and said, “Sure”.
The employee saw around his house. It was an old home, with the damaged paints and cracked walls. A small tricycle which carries gas cylinders was outside. The two boys were playing with each other, whilst the two girls were doing their homework. The mother was making her baby sleep in her lap.
A poster stuck on the wall opposite to their home read
“Live Happily with a Small Family”
The employee saw that and smiled sarcastically and left the place. He met the other employee at the end of the street.
“Sir, you seem like to struck in a single house. I have completed three houses by now”, the other employee said
“Yes Sir, Come let us have hot tea. I am tired”
And they sat on the bench of the nearby tea shop.
The mother came to the tea shop with her 9 months baby, and she asked the tea shopman, “Anna. please give milk in this bottle”
She got the bottle from him back and when she gave money to him, the shopman said,
“It’s ok ma. Take the milk, I don’t want the money”
And the mother left the shop. The two employees who were having tea spoke to each other after watching these scenes.
“I think these people have no other job than giving birth to children and then begging like these” - He said to the other employee
Hearing this, the shopman interrupted “Sir, Please don’t speak without knowing about them”
“I am not speaking bad, I am speaking the truth. Did you see the poster struck in the wall, Can’t they stop with two children?” The employee raised his voice to the shopman.
“Sir, Did you see those two boys playing?.
They lost their parents in the Tsunami.
Those two little girls, They lost their parents in an accident. The small kid, someone left in the dustbin.
They decided not to have their own child because they were afraid that the love towards the other kids might reduce.” The shopkeeper said them.
The employee said the other, “Sir then mark them as the adopted children in the notebook”.
He was in tears, “No Sir, I can’t do that, I can’t be great as that man, But at least I can do a small help to him by not marking it as their adopted child”
While leaving he saw that house, the father was happily playing with his children. The Father saw the employee leaving, he folded his hands, and said “Thank you”
He left with a heavy heart.
“Therefore, See the heaven in other’s smile”
The short film ended with a heavy note. I closed the youtube.
----------------------------
I am the kind of guy who easily gets emotional on watching movies or short films or by reading a book.
It was four years back. It was a special day for me as i had got admission into a prestigious institute. I had already agreed to take my office colleagues for dinner. It was afternoon, I still remember. I was not in a position to adopt someone but still, I wanted to do something. I immediately called upon the nearest orphanage. A lady attended the call.
“Madam, I would like to provide dinner to the home tonight. Can you please let me know the number of children present.”
“Sir, there are twenty-two children here, Can you please come by 7.30.”
“Sure,” I said and hung the call.
I called A2B restaurant and ordered 30 packets of combo dinner. They told me to pick up the food by 7. I took an auto and reached there by 7.30.
Along with the help in the home, I distributed the food to the children. The incharge requested me to give one food pack for two children.
I said to her, “Madam, there is enough food for all the children”
“Yes Sir, But the quantity of food is more than enough for two kids.”
She spoke, “Children, Share the Food and Eat”
The children immediately formed a group of two and sat opposite to each other and ate. I was shocked to see this. And they were happily eating sharing the single combo.
Whilst they were eating, I was telling them, there is still food, please feel free to ask me.
After they finished eating, the incharge called a kid from the home. He must be 12 years old. He should be the senior most among them, as he was tall. He told him to give the remaining food to the nearby hospital.
Again, I was astounded but felt very happy inside. I was playing with the kids for some time. They were sharing the joyous moments about them. I just loved seeing them smile. It cannot be expressed in words. It can only be felt.
When I was about to leave, she said me to wait. The kids gathered up, and they started to sing, “Happy birthday to you”.
They had assumed it to be my birthday...
That was the third time in my life, I cried.
I was broken completely. I didn’t tell them that it is not my birthday. I saw that lady, and she nodded like “I know it’s your birthday” and I left the place with a heavy heart wiping my tears.
I didn’t have enough money after that to give the treat to my colleagues. I didn’t attend their calls. However, I felt complete that day. After that, visiting the homes, every month end, became a regular routine for me.
I still have a bad name among my friend circle that “I am a guy, who doesn’t spend much money"
However, I rejoice to see the smile in the kid's faces.
A good job, A happy family, Abroad trip, Car, and many good things happened in my life after that. But, You know, there’s nothing like seeing the smile on their faces, laughing together, playing.
It’s a feeling you can't forget!!!
